The Chaffee Loom

This typical timber-frame loom was owned and used by the Chaffee family of Rome, Pennsylvania. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, nearly all families in the area had spinning wheels for spinning their own yarn, and many families (about one in four) also had looms for weaving their own cloth. In later years many of the old timber-frame looms were used for weaving rag rugs.
